My love is always at my side,
A mistress cold and real.
Not of flesh and bone is she-
But blue, case-hardened steel.
A choice I made so long ago,
A lonely way of life...
Sheís closer than a brother, though
A lover, or a wife....
If I were carving notches-
To ten I could lay claim...
Each one a spectre in my dreams,
Each one a personís name.
Each one a human life cut short,
No claims, I wasnít williní
I never drew upon a man-
Unless he needed killiní.
Now, it seems Iím growing old
And time has slowed my hand,
One day soon Iíll end my string-
There, face down in the sand.
Iíll leave no one to dress my grave-
No one to mourn for me..
At last the old man with his scythe
Shall set a prisoner free.
The nights are long, I sing my song
Until my race is run-
My only friend, my love, my all-
A Smith&Wesson gun.

ah, the loneliness of the gunfighter's life is palpable in this.

 It matters not how strait the gate;
How charged with punishments the scroll;
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
