LAST BLIND DATE

It happened on a Christmas eve,
back in our little hometown church,
where I was seated next to her, my date.
She had reluctantly accepted, and so had I,
this blind date, lovingly arranged by friends
before I had arrived in town on Christmas leave...

But as we started singing those beautiful old hymns
we listened secretly, each to the other's voice,
while peeking furtively, each at the other's  face,
and praying silently that God would tell us if
this stranger next to us might be the one
we both had waited for so long...

Then, when the final song was sung we peeked again
and caught each other in the act, ashamed at first,
that smiling eyes and lips revealed too much,
but suddenly we knew the glorious truth
that this was love, the real thing!
Yes, God had spoken...

Thank you, Balladeer! I wrote this to
commemorate that first and last blind
date she and I had, on Christmas Eve
of 1939.  We've had countless dates
together since, most recently yesterday.
At 83, we are still madly in love.

Willem,
All this time I thought you were a young man,
A polished one at that!
I'm enjoying your poetry, and this is no exception!
