Love is Timeless Happenstance

The old brown desk
with the brown desk blotter
she bought from the thrift store
for five dollars,
to own the magic of
carved names, etched hearts
and a peace sign hidden there.
Oh, the lives
that desk had known,
she sighed to the sales clerk
who looked puzzled.

What brought them to tell
their heartís desire
to the desk top?
she wondered,
she of youth and longing
she of boredom.

Imagination was her treasure.
She knew that Mark loved Julie.
"Love is timeless happenstance",
was carved so deep
pieces of eraser
were trapped in the inscription.

She was tantalized into writing
love and heart break stories
from the feelings that came to her
as she touched the chiseled words.

Sometimes she would amuse herself
adding more,
she wrote "I love you"
even though there was no one.

Then one day she noticed
"lonely?" and a telephone number
inside the middle drawer.
Restless made her finger
push the numbers.

She and he still keep the desk
that brought them to each other,
next to, "love is timeless happenstance"
and I love you
she carved his name.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

Oh my God, Martie, you have touched this nostalgic heart with this one.  I can't even begin to tell you the number of ~things~ in my home with this sentiment.

When I was a youngster in love for the first time (5th grade)... I carved my name and the name of my first love on a desk at school.  I got in great big trouble for it.

My mother (unbeknowst to me) went to a school auction sale and bought that very desk to give me when I turned 18.  It ~lives~ in my home to this day.  The boy's name was Mickey ... and he and I are good friends to this very night !

What a memory-maker you penned.
Thank you ... thank you ... thank you ! ! !
~Marge~

Marge--what a wonderful story this poem brought back to you.  Much more wonderful then my little fiction--but this was the flavor I was looking for when I wrote it.  Thank you for sharing it.

Severn--Thanks for always being such a faithful reader.

This is marvelous, Martie! And fiction! To match Marge's real life experiences!

And that was a great thing your Mom did, huh, Marge?!

Thank you Denise for reading and yes Marge made my day with her comment.

The Inscription

I carved your name,
in a heart,
with the words
"I love you"
in the rough bark of a tree.

The days passed,
spring turned to summer,
summer to fall,
fall to winter,
winter to spring,
one year to another,
and yet the letters remained.
After some time,
moss covered them in spots,
but still they endured.

Oh, how that inscription
weathered the storms...
I wish I could say the same
for our love.

Beautiful poem...thank you for the inspiration. I love Marge's story too
