Marriage to misery
cries for redemption
seeking to be enveloped
by the inner warm found only in a pure heart
dwelling in the comforting safety
of a true love's embrace
that brings full circle
the cycle of fate
and time

Echoes of the painful refrain
trapped within
her broken heart
seep into the tear-streaked chorus
of her voice
igniting my ire
to raise magnificent rage
to stand before that heart as shield
from outer demons release

Reality born of mankind's flaws
seeks to undermine
the spark of hope
that chokes
on marital deceit
and grieve
for the release
of unrequited dreams
that slip away
with the intrusive inclusion
of rapturous insanity

Pandora crushed the fragile being
of hope
when the lid to iniquity was closed
maiming in turn the crippled form
of twisted love
that feeds febrile dreams of peace
though were it not for love
insanity would be the only escape

And I say keep on loving my friend.

Darkness at its best - but with that spark of light...

'the inner warm found only in a pure heart...' - love that.

"Were it not for love, insanity would be the only escape"...I loved that line. It struck me because it was so true. Great job, DE.

"though were it not

the only escape"

Amazing -- and frightening because it is so true.  I have never looked at the options that way, but this makes a compelling argument ...

Scott- THANK YOU for writing me a poem! LOL... just kidding... i know this wasn't for me.

Interesting view on love & life. When Pandora's Box was opened, you know what happened! I chose "pandora" as a pen name because with the name alone, a plethora of trials may come to mind.... along with memories of how our human love and strength has helped us overcome certain trials and obstacles throughout our lives! Human beings are sooooo resiliant and multi-faceted.

Your poem reflects a lot of pain mixed with love. I will have to read it several times to see what different meanings I can get from it. It's good to see you writing free verse... I LOVE free verse so much when written well... when it's not just prose set in lines, but when it paints a picture with imagery for the reader. Your poem, here, has some very good lines and shows you are aware of what must take place to write good free verse.

your friend, pan

DE, this is a truly magnificent piece of free verse. I can't come anywhere close to this sort of expression...I do envy your way with it!

Now you see why I nag you all the time!

To be perfectly honest, free verse baffles me entirely, but thank you for your kind replies.
