                                                   ICE CASTLES IN THE SKY

                                                  by Rod Walford

Oh! you elected minions, who in your towers of ivory repose,
Insulated by cocoons woven from broken threads of promised intent;
Twisting words with eloquence to suit your purpose
As it bends and sways in the fickle draught of self-indulgence.

You dwell among the ramparts of power and control
Treading the dark corridors of deception and trickery;
Behind the iron barred portcullis of the fortress of bureaucracy.
Where well meaning hearts, fast hardened in the dollarís white-hot forge
Become as tempered steel - a sword to strike at freedomís hard won shield.
What misguided force is it that seeks to govern the human spirit?
Never will it surrender to your covert intrusions, nor become slave to oppressive dictates.

Freedom? She will ride high in her victory, as sure as there is only one true flight.
As the arrow, straight from the bow flies, so the words from the hearts of the just shall penetrate the transparent walls of your ice castles in the sky.
Your crystalline fragments shall fall, shattered in ignominy,
And the root of all evil be exposed for its true worth.

Ah! That you and I are one in spirit!
Fellow poets, and seekers of the truth, that we may see the secrets of the impostor, and thus protect our world of shared beauty.
Let us rejoice in our unity, and be secure in empathy, yes, and stronger still!
That we may know our spirit will be carried to a place far beyond the melting remnants of the ice castles in the sky.

Fantastic!!!! (There aren't enough exclamation marks to express how powerful an effect your poem had on me!)
What were you thinking of? It sounds like a speech when you are about to lead the masses to battle bureaucracy, like WINZ etc..or a student occupation of the Chancellor's office!

Rod,
Wonderful poem!
Unfortunately, I've lived in a military dictatorship, where silence is the only means of survival. We are so fortunate to be able to write poems such as this one and not lose a life because of it. But,I think technology has in fact done away with censorship for the most part, so I guess poets everywhere are free to speak these days, at least through some media.
I am thoroughly enjoying your work
Give us more!

Seaangel - Thanks! I actually wrote this one afternoon whilst decorating the lounge (there was a politician droning on the radio and I kept jumping down from the ladder and making notes!) It was my first attempt at non-rhyming poetry.

Liz - thank you too! You are so right about our privilege of freedom of expression. Many lives have been sacrificed in the quest for it. I read somewhere that many poets can be quite "vicious" at times when airing their feelings! I think Sinatra voiced the poet's aspirations admirably in the lines
"To say the things he truly feels......
And not the words of one who kneels"
Which reminds me..... I am enjoying your work very much too!
Thanks
Rod

Rod,
You said a mouth full here
And I drank two beers.
I agree with all the above.
It takes more then a dove,
To forster political love.
