Where do clowns go to laugh
When the circus closes down
Its wonders to the current town
And canvas tents all lay in half?

When lion, tiger and giraffe
Are tucked away in steel cages
As managers count up the wages
To split among the circus staff -

Where do clowns go to laugh?

Where do the men behind the masks
Of greasepaint eyes and lipstick grins
That smile out over double chins
And roll about whenever asked

Go to let their cares unwind
With someone else to play the fool
While they sit perched upon a stool?
Please tell me for my peace of mind

For I was one who used to laugh
And now I need that special place
Where tears can dry without a trace,
Where smiles can split your face in half;

There - where the clowns go to laugh.

Well, Bal, my dear...one look at me first thing in the morning would make any clown either laugh, or run screaming from the room in pure terror.
Maybe that's what those giggling noises are coming from under my bed. hmmm...
Well, anyway...great poem!

I don't know! Good question! I love the theme and the envelope rhyme, too! Another masterpiece, Balladeer.

Clowns when they take off happy faces
walk around with frowns and large briefcases.

This is sad Balladeer.  You don't need a place to laugh, you just need a sense of humor and that you already got.  Great poem as usual.

Powerful question...Where do clowns go to laugh?  It led to a great peice of work that I enjoyed.  I suppose after thought....A clown may only laugh at them selves....although I know you really don't ask the question....or maybe you do

Maybe they listen to Derek and Clive?
Watch anything with Jim Carey in it?
They don't come to my house I can assure you of that.
Good question and great writing my friend

I like the way you did this with 1st and last lines, the middle too!  I think you might have found that place, the one that's filled with love. It's right here in Passions, with lots of laughs too!

A clown goes to his room to cry
To wonder, ponder, question why
The smiles he gives so generously
Don't touch the heart of such as he.
There's so much sadness deep inside
Only when he's "on" does it subside.
His soul drowns in unshed tears
As he creates smiles, allays fears.
A child's grin splits his face in half -
The clown still has no place to laugh.

I like your poem suthern, but no ditto this time, I will have to disagree, friends are a clown's haven, call, write, or yahoo a friend and pretty soon the clown (and the friend) will be laughing,
well at least that works for me.....

great poem Mr. Balladeer, really liked it
