Keeping Time

I am in the tall grasses
and weeds of the vacant lots
of California childhood

Starched and pressed
white dress
green in spring
from romping trails through mustard.

Tip toe through the yellow blossoms
sit down in such a way
no one can see you
a magical world
of ant colonies and honey bees
pretend so small
the dandelion leaf
is your umbrella.

Back in that sharply painted
flower field
my mother
pulled fox tails from socks
bleached grass stains
with the vision of imagination.

The mustard fields
were the undertow
pulling me up into curves.
I can still smell
the weed killer
used against the vacant lot
where I would hide

The sprinkler
endlessly ticks familiar,
the clock also,
keeping time
to heart beat
and footsteps.

but...
I can still return
to the tall grasses
and weeds
of California childhood
and take you with me.

You've done it again - transported me well away from where I sit and taken me into your life - which screams an excellent poem, Martie.

Martie -
This one 'talks' to me.
I retreat to the limbs of the old camphor tree. It was my refuge overlooking the backyard.
You took me to your field ... thank you.

What a gorgeous recapture of youth!  I always get such sharp and beautiful images from your poems, Martie, and this was no exception.

Just sitting here shaking my head as usual, and wondering how you see everyday things in such beauty lady.  A weenie bump up as I can.
