"Oak Spring"

It's hidden deep within the woods
A hidden place within my mind
Approaching it now thrills my heart!
A secret place no one would find

Among the hills, nestled deep
Remembrances of former years
A winding way through field and wood
And then it suddenly appears

Framed in green of summer woods
A clearing for both house and stream
A lush green carpet greets the way
And jogs the memories of my dream

It hasn't changed in all these years
The house built snug 'gainst wooded hill
A thousand shades of summer green
Surrounds the place of childhood thrill

A house with walls of covered log
A fireplace as tall as I
The centuries old abode still sits
And weathers snow and sunny sky

Its history wouldn't have come to light
If not for one who stopped one day
He told us of the underground
A railway stop along the way

His siblings numbered twelve or more
And grew up in this lovely place
Descendents of a running slave
The memories brought tears to his face

He looked around in disbelief
It hadn't changed in all those years
He thanked us for the moments dear
And then he wiped away his tears

No lovelier acreage in all the world
This quaint old home as a child I knew
That sits beside a mighty oak
A secret known to very few

And now I stand to gaze upon
The beauty of this hidden place
The childhood home, the crystal stream
Brought tears to fall upon my face
