A child called Annie, sweet and seven
mute, shaken, disturbed and quiet
she knew more abut hell than heaven
less about peace but more about riot

Dull Brown eyes that were always cast down
shaking hands and smaller than petite frame
knew less about smiles than she did about frowns
from a battered home was where she came

Into a haven where we all felt safe and loved
people to tell us off which showed that they care
goodnight stories complete with many hugs
mummies that run their hands through our hair

Little Annie had been burnt by cigarrettes
called parents by name abusers by nature
eyes and demeanor showed she never forgets
thanks heavens for homes and legislature

Night all

RainbowGirl - You fairly shook my soul with this one. God bless you for your love of children. Your very open heart shines through this one.
Thank you so much.
Love to you ~Marge~

Please don't lock anything away if it means poetry with such depth and feeling. I could see this child as your words unfolded her story. So sad!

RG: Someone needs to speak for the Annies of this world... and you do so eloquently. Big hugs, dear lady with the big heart!

I knew by the title of this one it was gonna be heartwrenching.
RG don't ever lock up your memories. I have to agree with everyone here so far...I'm glad you care enough about these children that you write and share it with others. It is an eye opener and a reminder to us all what some little ones go through.

Rather than say an individual thank you to you all, I thought I'd take up space and tell you a little more about Annie, if you don't mind?

When I met Annie, she didn't speak, not a word, not to anyone...The warden where I was, was a lovely man, kind, gentle, understanding and with an infinite amount of love for children, an instinct for caring...I personally will never forget him...anyway, he introduced me to Annie as he thought he'd seen a spark in her eyes whenever I entered a room...so, although I lived in a different home (they were attached) I used to go over nightly, take her to bed, read to her and of course, I wanted to hug her, she was so frail....anyway, Fred decided that cups of tea were the answer.. So he used to get Annie to fetch him his cup of tea in the afternoons, cup and saucer (we are british) and by the time she walked across the room, there was no tea left in the cup, she had spilt it all because she shook so much...but Fred was patient, never yelled and little by little, these shakes started to settle and one day, Fred got a whole cup of tea...one of the things Annie loves was my evening gowns, I think it was because they sparkled, I was only nearly 16 but I loved to go out and dress up...anyway, she had a favourite, it was a white lurex halter neck, ankle length dress...still not speaking but her eyes would start to look lived in...anyway, when you reach 16 you leave and the night before I left, Annie spoke her first words..."I love you"

Rainbow,
Annie, child of heavenly grace
Raindrop tears upon her face
Rainbow's colors shone on her
And Annie's heart sang out a word

I love you for telling this story

Hoot: I don't really know how to answer that, other than maybe it's because I don't have any children of my own so I guess I think they're all my children... I guess we all do though, don't we?..
