The Tribe Of The Lost
by ©Richard Budig 1998

I am Fallen Eagle
Spirit of a warrior
Who has no resting place
Trapped in space and time
On this sacred mountain
With the wandering spirits
Of my lost and lonely brothers
Brothers whose bones
Were taken from hallowed places
By grave robbers and scholars
Who thought it right and just
To invade the places where we slept
The same thieves who thought it right
To take our lands and our dreams
Little more than a century ago
So now I gather here with the lost -
Braves with names like Blue Elk
Running Ten Bears, Long Wolf
Walking Bird and Standing Horse
Each of us is different from the other
Some are from the great Crow Nation
Others are battle hardened Apache
And still others are gentle fishermen
And yet we are all the same
Together we are a new tribe
The tribe of the lost
The tribe of the sorrowful
The tribe that never sleeps
And each day we gather
This council of the lost
To add our voices to the wind
That whispers above our mountain
Oh Great Spirit
Hear the mournful cry
Of me
Fallen Eagle
And this council in the sky
Let our people go

This is excellently written. The wording is right on and the flavor and atmosphere of the subject matter is not compromised. Very, very well done.

I love this!!! Very authentic and mornful. True to the Indian spirit and the souls on behalf of which it was written. Good job!

We have a tendency to forget - how short a time span has actually passed since this travesty befell this country. A century is a very brief time indeed. Thank you for the reminder...

Richard - May the great Spirit of the Cherokee join with yours in song and lift your spirits high.
Fallen Eagles will soar again.
Peace and love.
The joy in reading this piece is a reminder that will stay in my heart.
