Say Not a Word

Say not a word - think not a thought
Please don't tell me what I ought
Do not point which path to walk
Or tell my tongue what word to talk

Please don't lead me on my way
Do not help my debt to pay
Do not choose my closest friend
Or end my strife until the end

Put not a boundary on my flight
Let me soar to highest height
Beside my sorrow you may sit
But let me bear the weight of it

Do not question my belief
Do not delve into my grief
Tell me not what love to love
Make not a cage for mourning dove

Do not probe my deepest thought
Do not tell me what I ought

Would you teach a star to shine
Would you write a poet's rhyme
Would you show a butterfly
Which direction he should fly

Would you choose the sunset hour
Would you teach a rose to flower
Would it please you to explain
To a raindrop how to rain

Would you alter night and day
Would you teach a priest to pray
Would your heart be full of bliss
To teach a hummingbird to kiss

Would you then my heart define
And lead my soul as though it's blind

Oh Elizabeth...your poetry is so elegant and beautiful! I envy your talent
And I particularly love this poem, as I am the Queen of "Don't Tell Me What To Do!!"
*LOL*
May I print this out? I'd love to keep it!

...
only share with me your heart's desire
tell me just what sparks your fire,
and lest you forget what I just taught,
share with me, but tell me not.

Beautiful piece, Elizabeth...fits more of us than you know.

Caroline. Thank you for the kind words. You're right,I also have always followed my heart ( and that's probably what got me into so much trouble!)

Rainbow, What sparked this poem?
Good advice from loving parents
On which you didn't act
May be the very same advice
Your son just snickered at

Danni, Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks

Balladeer,
Your comments always make me cry
And I don't understand the why
I think because the quality
Of your lovely poetry

Sy,
Poor poet wonder, name of Sy
Sand always flying in his eye
Confusius say, Confusius teach
Sand in your eye, get off the beach!

Denise and Dark Angel
Thank you both. certainly you may hang this poem in your home. Why not. We parents must be reminded to keep our mouths shut
(While grimacing)

Ruth, Thanks. How about a springtime meeting of the minds?

Martie
Flying free on wisdom's feather
Only after stormy weather

Thanks!

Sy,
No sand is blowing in your face?
Then I accept your compliments with grace
For I do truly appreciate
Words from a poet truly great

Marge,
Not too much insight that hasn't already been sited. This poem was inspired by a Brazilian saying "Don't teach a priest how to pray" There is also another saying from the Amazon. "A snake knows another snake" That would make a great poem, too.
Thank you for everything
Elizabeth
