The box was open and isolated in the middle of the floor
as the lady wrapped her arms around her
alone and cold in the corner of the room
contents beckoning until she could stand it no more

she'd brought it in clearing away cobwebs with a broom
but she couldn't find the courage to look inside
hours had come and gone and she remained sitting still
phone unanswered unable to move tho' she tried

tired, hungry and thirsty she knew she had to find the will
the box holding parts of her life had been untouched for years
thinking back she wondered why she had saved them at all
just thinking about opening them brought about fresh tears

it couldn't go on, now it was open she'd have to look by nightfall
pouring a cognac she got the first box out and put it on her lap
she could make out only one word barely legible it was 1971
she was fourteen then with a body that became a living trap

He's been a blind date organised by a friend the 'first' one
running home with partially torn clothing she waited for her mum
no comfort there as she was told she'd brought it on by going
shivering under the blankets her only comfort was in sucking her thumb

wondering if people could tell would she see looks of disgust and contempt
nightmares happened daily after that but she buried it deep inside
she'd never be like other girls nor would she be able to wear white
she'd lost her most precious gift and had nothing but her pride

if only she knew what was yet to come and how much she would need to fight
it's over I'm never going back there again and she quickly put the box inside the bin
taking out another this one had been protected and the date was clearly shown
the music played inside her mind "puppy love" and the image of his violent grin

pretty soon he wanted what she wouldn't give and inside her his seed was grown
she threw the box across the floor as anger had its way at last she knew it wasn't her
smashing the glass upon the wall as all her pent up emotions released their inner hold
looking inside the box only a jagged piece of cotton the dress itself remained a blur

the secrets bruned inside with all of the things she'd never once told
now it was the time to leave the bad things behind
she went through all the other boxes dealing with the pain one by one
the pressure began to ease and images faded if not disappearing from her mind
another cognac and she knew for certain the past was gone and she had finally won !

We can't keep the boxes closed forever. Excellent writing, full of painful emotion and victory in the end. HUGS to a very special person.

A very powerful poem, Rainbow.

This is truly impressive, Rainbow...and that's what we must do....open the boxes, face the fears and then throw them away, never to cause pain again. Wonderfully written.

Rainbow...wow, what a strong piece that speaks volumes. Sometimes I think it would be nice if we could package up all our problems one by one and take them out at a later date we we are more willing/able/ready to deal with them. It just doesn't happen that way though...some of us carry those packages, that extra little baggage with us for a very long time before we are able to throw it out/ put it away for good. What an inspiration this poem is

Well I feel a bit miniscule here behind JTF LOL but had to say RG...awesome, very inspiring piece you've written here. Having opened several boxes myself, I can say the freedom is wonderful! I still have a few in my attic, and I'm bringing them down one by one. Happy smashing, friend Let it go!

RG, your poem really touched me and gave me goose-pimples all over. It must have taken a lot of courage to open all these boxes. Big hug to you girl. : )

This poet cannot find the words to express the emotional impact of your words. May you fill many boxes with joy.

Munda: Surprisingly enough, it took more courage to write the poem than to open the boxes..

HUGS

Martie: One day, I hope that too but so far its eluded me but the wish will never end until I have..

HUGS

DA: Thanks Pal, I must admit the sound of shattering glass was great, shame I couldn't have thrown it at him, but men have strength, sadly

HUSG

Pepper: Thanks sweetheart and thanks for the cards, I may not always say so but they mean a lot to know you care and understand..I'm really lucky to have found a home.

I didn't comment the first time I read this... I had but a few moments... and this deserves much more than a quick response. Now I have more time, and the words still fail me. I can only imagine the courage it took to write this poem, dear friend... and I applaud you for taking control of your life... I'm in awe of you taking a wretched, painful past and putting it in its place... and I wish you a future most victorious.

Rainbow, this poem is so powerful.
Like others have said, it would be wonderful to be able to pack all of our painful pasts up in boxes and never look back, but thats just not realistic and you've hit this perfectly. Thanks for sharing something so beautiful with us.

It's astounding, isn't it? How a single experience can alter the course of our lives forever??? You've expressed yourself quite eloquently here, RG...

Elizabeth: Thank you but I really hope that such feelings as these find a home in which they can lose the pain and find comfort....

But perhaps you meant the emotion rather than the pain..:-)

HUGS

Suthern: You, Scott, JTF helped enormously, you let me talk, you listened, extended your hearts to me but most importantly, you offered me love, unconditional love.

HUSG

Beri: these were boxes, how to explain?...Well, sometimes an experience is so painful, we can't forget so we archive it somewhere, some may think they have disposed of it, but a pain that runs so deep like that of a running brook, will always find a place to stay, so my way was to package it up and take it out at a late date...not sure if that makes sense....but something catastrophic happened to me and I had to find a way to stop the past from destroying my future, so I opened the boxes...it's not over, winning doesn't always mean a trophy but signals a beginning..:-))

HUGS

Nan: Eloquent?...No, you are eloquent, I'm just talking from within my mind and hoping that somewhere I can reach out and maybe help another to handle an event that needs time before you can examine the damage and repair it...but, I thank you for thinking it is eloquent, from the bottom of my heart...now shouldn't I have a pic to signal your arrival...a cute rainbow would be nice...:-)))

RainbowGirl - An awesome piece of writing.
Boxes to be reckoned with ... and you explored them expertly.

Wow, there is such raw emotion in this! And so happy that she's finally thrown away the past - she is indeed a winner!
