The Way It Is, The Way It Was

Dressed in summer dusty gown
The century old Brazilian town
So far removed from present day
And living in forgotten way

The spoken word remains the proof
Under terra-cotta roof
The way it was, the way it is
Still living life as to be lived

And set against the sunset sky
A silhouette of deathly cry
The subject of the weekly food
The bounded steer his future rued

And not to know the human why
But knowing he's the next to die
The ritual stays the way it was
The reason being just because

Elizabeth,
The things that are, have always been
And I still don't know what they mean.
To dwell on the paradox to long
Is a very dreary song.
But you sing it like a creed.
That is a pleasure to read.
Well done.
