The sweet repose upon the face,
Was more than I could bear-
It had a childlike innocence-
Though gray was in his hair.

A streak of mud upon his brow-
He hadn’t shaved for days...
And tools of war, each one in place
Before him were arrayed.

Rifle here, spare magazines-
Two flares, three hand grenades-
A clacker for the claymores,
A warrior here, in spades!

But in his mind the Asian mud-
Did simply not exist,
He was back in Alabama-
Watching early morning mist...

Rising from a fishing hole-
While he was skipping school.
He never was a martinet..
For keeping silly rules.

Perhaps he dreamed of that first date
A case of “puppy love”-
Long before he’d ever heard-
The phrase: “Death From Above”!

His kind have been in every war-
From ancient Rome till now...
Duty is their god, their all..
They’ll never stoop nor bow.

It seems they are a breed apart-
Who march to different drums.
And answer different bugle calls,
No matter where they’re from..

Chevrons, son, and rockers-
Is all you’ll ever see...
They’re never General officers,
They’re Sergeant's , if you please!

I enjoyed this piece, Gunslinger (I enjoy your name too! ) I'm going to have to make it a point to check out your work.

I am always amazed by your poems Gunslinger. This one especially, painted with a sensitive mind.

You sure do have a way with words, cowboy.
Greatly enjoyed by this reader.

Gunny's never die, as long as there is someone else out there to bust.
