How I Know It's a Poem

A poem is more than words arrayed
Within a metric frame.
It's more than passion poured out
Or an complex verbal game.

It is to rhyme and meter
What speech is to the tongue.
It's not the metal of the bell
But the metal when it's rung.

I can say what a poem isn't.
What it is I may not know.
But I'm sure that I have read one,
When what I've read won't let me go.
