This Cowboys Trail Is Finished

Would you like to take a ride with me
To places I have been?
To a time when I was young and free,
A brother to the wind.
A dreamer just turned twenty-
With the whole world there to claim-
A suitcase and a saddle
Not a nickel to my name.
I’ve seen Reno in the winter-
When all was Ice and snow-
I stopped in Battle Mountain-
It was twenty two below...
I knew a Texas boy would freeze-
I had to do my best-
I stuck my thumb up in the air
Caught a semi headed West.
I worked in California
For going on two years-
Up in the rocks and mountains-
A chasin’ full grown steers.
I started looking Eastward-
To the land of the Lone Star-
I quit and drew my wages,
But I didn’t make it far.
I hiked East on old I-40-
Just looking for a spread-
To make some pocket money-
I had Texas in my head.
I met a man in Winslow-
Who stood me to a meal,
And when he saw my saddle-
Said, “I know a real good deal.
Without a car or money,
A man won’t get too far.
I think they’re hiring riders
Out at the Bar T Bar”...
I lived there in the bunkhouse-
For ten a day and found-
And once a month I’d see the cook
And bum a ride to town.
I love the Painted Desert-
The mountains in the spring-
When snowfall turns to water,
And the desert bare..turns green.
I love the rocks and valleys-
The sagebrush and the sand-
I guess I must admit it...
I’m a Southwest lovin’ man.
I love the plains of Texas-
Far as the eye can see-
There’s room to roam and ramble
For a tumbleweed like me.
I guess I could go on and on
I’d rather far, go back-
To workin’ some man’s cattle,
From some honest pony’s back.
When my last mile I have traveled-
Won’t you carve upon my stone...
This cowboy’s trail is finished-
And the Big Boss called him home.

I sure do like following your tumbleweed.
What a spinner of the tale you are.
And ... I've been to your web page and seen
first-hand ... just why you believe in the things you write.
Very, very nice.

You do spin a wonderful tale Sir. Ahhh I always have this wonderful pitcure of you in my head when I read your work. A man on a horse, rambling on in no hurry. The essence of power, yet the gentleness of a colt.

I like this poem, Gunslinger. It's a story told about a place you love and your life. I think we all have one of those places where you just feel it's where you belong. (I know I do.) Great!

Slinger: I echo all the above... you are one of the best here in PIP. Truly love your style, although I be city born and raised.
