I place a wall
Before myself
To keep my feelings inside
A steel wall
Reinforced
Impenetrable
A wall of Styrofoam
Is my defense against
Hurtful comments from others
Easily broken through
Not hard to climb
It can only take so much
Before collapsing
And I under it
My steel wall
Backs me up
Supports me lest I fall
No one knows
The true way I feel
They are none the wiser
To my pain
And my sorrow
Unless they have the key
Of true friendship
Few have this key
And so I stumble blindly
Searching for a stronghold in my life
A constant factor
Unchanging
Something to anchor me down
To keep me
From being swept away
By a current of pain
I reach out
Looking for a hand to hold
A life raft
I find nothing
And I sink to the bottom
Of depression
And self-hatred
