Scarlet Lid
by ãRichard J. Budig

He came home, our hero did,
Or what was left of him,
In a box with a scarlet lid.

Within, in somber repose,
Attached to mournful purple,
Lay a medal in gold of rose.

And tucked safely inside,
An official parchment,
That spoke of valor and of pride.

Few men, if any at all,
Said the crisp little note,
Show such courage as they fall.

"Machine gun fire and grenades
Filled the air and froze the blood,
One man against the cannonade! . . ."

Oh the wellspring of valor is deep,
And its water's so cool,
So now our hero lies asleep.

And every once in awhile,
When she's so alone,
His mother holds the box like a child.

And dreams of him as a kid,
All dusty and bright-eyed,
Before he came home in a box with a scarlet lid.

. . .And dreams of him as a kid,
Before he came home
In a box with a scarlet lid.
