March Memories

Through an open window
the fragrance of orange blossoms
stirs memories.
In that lingering citrus scent,
longing becomes
a little girl
enchanted by a tree,
by the perfection of a day
when simple dirt and roots
the canopy of a thousand buds
was the soul of importance.

That little girl is me,
scrubby kneed inquirer of
bird songs,
toes wiggling excitedly
in the soft cool dirt,
the marveler of insects
and asker of questions.

She was not always this innocent
or kind, nor would she ever
be so awe struck by simply
being where she was
and who she was.

And as far as days go
she could not make this one
last longer then it was
and so it fell into the past
and was lost
until now.

Martie, I bet you enjoyed the memory.
Lovely poem.

I love this Martie!
This has struck a chord - we do seem to lose that ability to find awe in the world around us. Recently I was on a plane for the first time and I got to see the world in a whole new way - the rivers looked like ribbons of pure silver in the sunlight, and the ocean looked like a sheet of glass with the shadows of clouds imprinted on it - and it truly brought back my sense of discovery. I had my nose pressed to the tiny little window the whole way!
Absolutely marvellous poem - big cheers.
I love the lines 'marveler of insects/and asker of questions'

Another beautiful performance, Martie. I, too, am a 'marveler of insects'.
