As I am sure you all have heard,
Australia recently went to the polls,
To vote yes or no for a republic,
A future that could take it's toll.

We'll look into this briefly,
As to what affected me,
And why I felt the way I did,
Our future what would it be?

They said a republic would be good,
And they wouldn't change the flag YET,
No more we needed the Queen,
We have to show the world yet..

That we are proud Australians,
Able to stand on our own,
We've grown up don't need England anymore,
We'll toil a different stone.

I don't agree as yet,
One day a republic is sure to come,
But I like Oz the way it is now,
Don't let our history come undone.

My Grandfather and many more,
Lost so much in World war 1,
Then Uncles and such in WW2,
They didn't do it for fun.

They did it for Australia ,
And old England too,
They fought so hard for the world WE
believed in,
There was nothing else to do.

If we became a republic,
To me we are dishonouring them,
All they believed in,
What meant so much back then.

They say the wouldn't change the flag,
I don't believe that as well,
They'd make something ridiculous,
That nothing would dispell.

I like our country and it's history,
Our stuggles, toils and pain,
And if we had to vote again,
I would still vote the same.

Mother England is only an honorary system,
We can do as we please,
We can go to war if we want,
We don't have to ask the Queen.

I like our country this way it is just fine,
I'm proud of our past,
Our brave young men that went to war,
The flame still burns and will last.

If we voted for a republic,
We would dishonour 200 years,
Saying it meant nothing,
Bring new hardships and tears.

And the point that was worst for me,
Was the election was only 6 days before Rememberance Day,
It felt like to me, they didn't give a toss,
For many heroes lost along the way.

The no votes won I am pleased to admit,
Many Australians still honour our past,
We honour those who came before us,
No republican flag flown half mast.

It will happen one day and we are ready for that,
But done properly and in honour of history,
Not a polly hoping to call himself president,
Just another new chapter in a 200 year old story.

.

Politicians are good at screwing things up, aren't they? I hope things stay just as you like them, Isis.
