Joel’s Blood

Pale as hopelessness,
this house of skin and bones
is a prison,
an invisible jail
where coming and going
is timed
to the tainting and cleaning
of blood.

Is the soul, imprisoned in
his battered skin
also, taped by despair
to the bed where he
exposes his retched veins?

In each bag are
elixirs of hope,
two, three times a day.
No guarantees.

He is not made from
concentrate, he is fortified.
Will his shelf life
free him from waiting
in this desperate line
for used parts?

Watched my uncle drift away like this from cancer. We sometimes prayed for him to die so he wouldn't be in pain any longer. Powerful images.

Few things can be worse that dialysis. I feel for all that have to endure it. Good poem, Martie.

Martie,
I am at a loss of words for this one. You have described it wonderfully in all it's pain and feeling of helplessness. This is an extreamly well written and heartfelt piece of poetry. BRAVO!!!

I appreciate your comments and thought you'd like to know that Joel got a new kidney and is now much better.
