Invented Poetry Types

quote:
Pleiades

This titled form was invented in 1999 by Craig Tigerman, Sol Magazine's Lead Editor.  Only one word is allowed in the title followed by a single seven-line stanza.  The first word in each line begins with the same letter as the title.  Hortensia Anderson, a popular Haiku and Tanka poet, added her own requirement of restricting the line length to six syllables.

Some examples have been posted on the World Haiku Review from A-Z listed here:
World Haiku Review - Volume 5 Issue 1, 2005

Background of the Pleiades: The Pleiades is a star cluster in the constellation Taurus.  It is a cluster of stars identified by the ancients, mentioned by Homer in about 750 B.C and Hesiod in about 700 B.C.  Six of the stars are readily visible to the naked eye; depending on visibility conditions between nine and twelve stars can be seen.  Modern astronomers note that the cluster contains over 500 stars.

The ancients named these stars the seven sisters: Alcyone, Asterope, Celaeno, Electra, Maia,
Merope, and Tygeta; nearby are the clearly visible parents, Atlas and Pleione.

The poetic form The Pleiades is aptly named: the seven lines can be said to represent the seven
sisters, and the six syllables represent the nearly invisible nature of one sister.

Example:

Tangerine

This small, beautiful fruit
tantalizes every
taste bud blooming on my
tongue.  Sweetly the juices
take over, the feeling
tremendously sinful,
transcending luscious bliss.

Ok, let’s go:

Spring

Summer dallies gracefully,
sending May her blessings and
so, we acknowledge each blade,
smell deep of bloom’s lavender,
sigh as the breeze comes to us
soothing winter worn egos,
scents swinging on Robin’s song.

Does this mean our "colourclass" is already over? Sorry but I'm skipping this one, but I shall keep an eye on the workshop. I'm far too thrilled there's some action here again.

Must be, munda Sunshine is just an exuberant soul who believes in multi-tasking.

I turn the class over to her innovations.

Sorrow

Silent tears wreck havoc, mascara
sketching a puzzling mask.
Saline taste, tapping, as my tongue
slips into capture mode.
Surrealistic reality is an oxymoron,
such is life sometimes.
Sorrow shielded by falling tears.

---

Mud

Mindless play on a spring day,
mired in ooey, ookey mud.
Mooshing between barefoot toes while I
make rivers to sail beetle boats upon.
Munching on homemade cookies, hands
muddy, dirty – crumbs gumming
my fingers together as I stomp in mud.

What...none of you ever had more than one teacher at a time? Not even in university?

Sigh.

I hand the baton back to Balladeer....

It's ok. I was just being...

exuberant!

Alison...

my dear...dear friend...

Seven lines...seven syllables.

All lines need to align with the title first character alphabet letter.

You did just fine with the alphabet...

but I think the syllable count is a bit off.

Unless I had one glass too many of merlot.

You are hereby offered a makeup paper if our Professor 'Deer allows.

Otherwise, you may withdraw from this class, as I was too exuberant with multitasking lessons.

Corrected Version:

Sorrow

Silent tears wet mascara,
sketching a face mask, tragic.
Saline taste tapping my tongue,
slipping into capture mode.
Surreal reality is
such a trite oxymoron,
still it seems appropriate.

----

Mud

Mindless play on a spring day,
mired in gooey warm mud.
Mooshing between bare toes while
making small leaf beetle boats.
Munching on homemade cookies,
mushy, grimy, cookie crumbs
make my fingers sweet sticky!
