I live within myself

A mother chicken waited anxiously for her little ones to hatch. She was excited because she had a rather pleasant batch. She used the time to think about how their lives would be and so started planning out the life of each and every chickadee. “This one will be beautiful and meet the handsomest rooster. This one will have such character and cause quite a stir. This one will be wisest in the entire farm. This one will be strong in mind and arm.” The last one that will hatch, she knew, looked frail and very small. She knew that one would be neither strong nor tall. She said, “This one will have to be protected more than most. I don’t expect, from this one, to have too much to boast.” Well, the eggs they hatched and the chicks grew up and the mother she was proud. To each respective one was given beauty, brains or clout. Yet, a surprise was brewing in the corners of that little barn. The smallest little chick there was, the baby of the farm. Her brothers and her sisters ignored the little one. They’d say, “She isn’t very interesting or a lot of fun.” So, she began planning out a life that was her own. She packed her bags and turned her back and left her little home. One day, she came upon a farm grander than she’d ever seen. But, just then, this little chick heard a most unpleasant scream. She ran toward that horrible sound as fast as she could. A little girl she found below as over the hole she stood. The little girl had fallen in and looked much too quiet and still. So, the chick rushed as fast as she could to the house upon the hill. She flew right in the open door and almost lost a wing, as the man in the kitchen lunged at her with a knife that he did swing. But, she was determined to get his attention and flew in and out the door. Finally he seemed to understand that her presence did mean more. He called his wife and out the door they both followed the little chick. She led them into a forest area of trees and brush so thick. She stopped when she reached the girl and flapped her feathers wild. The farmer and his wife both cried when they saw their precious child. The farmer climbed in and picked up the little girl. All four of them rushed back to the house upon the hill. The doctor came that very night and said the child was fine. “But, only because” he said, “you got to her just in time.” Well, the farmer and his wife hugged each other in happiness and then looked down at the chick with which they had been blessed. “You saved our little girl,” said the kind man. “This farm is yours as much as ours. It is the largest in the land.” But, one day on a tiny farm a little further west, a mother chicken looked down the road and fell out of her nest. The gold shined in the sun as the caravan came near. All the animals on the farm were filled with awe and fear. Well, the mother called her children to her side, “Look a most important chicken must be inside.” They all watched to see who would step out. That it must be royalty they had no doubt. Well, the driver stepped down and the doorman reached over and the animals’ eyes got wide. A beautiful chicken stepped from the coach and her brothers and sisters almost died. “No, it can’t be,” they said to each other and looked with questioning eyes to their mother. Well, the mother chicken gasped at this unexpected surprise. She reached wide her arms as tears fell from her eyes. Begging for forgiveness from her daughter she stood. All the animals looked to the chick to see if forgive she would. It was still as the little chick did stand and then quickly into her mother’s arms she ran. “I’m sorry for not believing in you and seeing who you really are.” “It’s okay, Mother,” said the chick, “there’s a lesson for us all. You really should have let us for our own lives find a match. And, Mothers, always remember, don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

Sunshine - thank you.  Sometimes I find it easier to write stuff in one sitting.  And when we find out the assignments I have to do them right away or my mind is always on it.  It's quite a distraction!  ;-P  tsk-tsk

Echoechoechoecho....um...I really don't have the patience to do endless echoes.

This one is superb, and weaves quite deftly, with internal and ending rhymes, the familiar proverb of speculation. Challenge well met!

Endlessecho,
Well told, an imaginative spin on an old proverb.

And thank you Doc.  Wanted to make this funny - didn't exactly turn out that way. (that's your forte)  But a differant spin is always good too. Glad you enjoyed.

Ahhh.. I promise I'm not trying to rack up replies in my post.  I don't mean to have 3 in a row from myself, but I just realized that Alicat was the only one I didn't reply to and I have to because you said some of the best things.  I really appreciate your taking the time to comment on the rhyme and speculation in my peice.  Thank you.  I'm glad you enjoyed!

This is wonderful, Endlessecho - I always wait until others have made all of their comments before I step in, so that I don't have any effect on their opinions.  It looks like that wasn't necessary here.  You've done a great job on this theme.  I enjoyed it a lot...
