Free verse is...?

Free verse is like
orange leaves lifted
in autumn’s first breath.

It’s a soft wind silently swooping
over a craggy limb,
A harbinger of December’s
icicle hymn,

As it builds momentum
and eyes become entranced
at the October fest
of orange and bronze.

It sways with the tree tops,
it bows to the wind
but never pauses
in a heartbeat of memory

It keeps floating down the page
like a flutter of leaves
tiptoeing down
a country road

Until a final gust of wind
swishes the orange leaves
out of sight -
off of the page

And it is then you know
for sure
the verse has come to

The End

Liz

Liz:

I enjoyed this picture of what "Free-verse is ...".  Nice offering.

Jim,
I feel like a kindergartener after reading other poems here, but that's what we're here for, isn't it.
Thanks for being such a great teacher

What do you mean?  Aren't we all kindergarteners (Pete might say I behave like a kindergartener sometimes)?  I think the problem is with those who are of the opinion that they've graduated already ... I learn something new all the time ... sometimes from you, sometimes from Nan and Pete, and more recently from Lauren.

Besides ... I like thinking of all of us being in the same class picture together ... I'm just a student too, ya know.

This is so beautiful, Liz...  I love the rich imagery in it.  Surely, the teacher will give you an A+

Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you.
This is a walk down a shady lane with the crisp autumn air in my lungs,
the brilliance of an October sky filtering
through the occassional cloud,
the almost forgotten vibrance of purely being alive to witness such beauty.
Thank you for reminding me.

The first thing that I learned in this class is how little I know.  Love the extended metaphor of your poem.  Thanks for sharing!

I feel like I want to follow that orange leaf.. just to see where it's headed next..(hopefully south for the winter.. )..

This is wonderful, Liz - You're just a wonderfully multitalented poetess, m'friend..
