A Cup Of Coffee

The wind sweeps glistening bits of snowy white
From rooftop laden drifts that came at night
The swirling gusts exaggerate the edge
Of roof and eaves, of wooden fence and hedge

I make my way in cautious easy pace
To grip with boot the snow’s most icy place
And there, the kitchen door is beckoning
To come inside from brisk and gusty sting

A coffee pot’s aroma at its peak
Flows swiftly to the cold at slightest creak
And fills the entrance way with soothing smells
With door half open to the frozen swells

Warm fingers reaching out fromoven heat
Tingle at my numb and frozen feet
I lay my wrap across a wooden peg
And sit to rub the warmth into my leg

It is the time to pour a coffee’s brew
To warm the cold of soul inside of you
Relaxing now before the window’s sight
Of heavy snows that fell into the night

This warmth would not be so, had I not gone
On laden footpath to the icy pond
To breath the cold and listen to the sound
of silent snow laid softly on the ground

Passing prints of creatures on the way
Determining their route that time of day
Gives purpose to my trek down hilly slope
And reason for another day of hope

And now I sit and watch through silvery glass
Eclipsed in white, as shiny sunbeams pass
Through window pane, I meet with cardinal eye
That stares a moment then decides to fly

With coffee cup in hand I watch him perch
A moments time upon a twig of birch
Then back to haven of a holly tree
Just as the warmth of kitchen is to me

We both observe each other for some time
He in his world of glee, and I in mine

I absolutely love this one, and will save and savor it to read again with my morning coffee. Thank you for this wonderful connection with nature.

Very real!!!  Goosebump kind, really.  I like the contrast of the daily task and the surprising element of discovering such beauty in a silent moment.  It reflects those moments of pause that make us really treasure being alive.

Well that was a "3-read poem" just fantastic.  I felt I was right there with you Liz.  My absolutely favorite lines were these, as it is just about the most wonderful "non-sound" there is ins't it?

To breath the cold and listen to the sound
of silent snow laid softly on the ground

and...to see tracks in the snow has always been a wonder to me since I was a child.  Oh this one I love.

(smiles) Oh my gosh, I love this, it feels just like I am sitting beside the fireplace with you! (big hugggssssss) May we all wake up and smell the coffee and look up to the Light and spread our wings with hope and joy! (kiss on cheek) I love this, sweet friend! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Elizabeth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Winter stillness can indeed be very beautiful, Elizabeth. I felt as though I was there watching this scene. Lovely work.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

Elizabeth,
I felt a bit like a voyeur when I read this,
or perhaps more accurately, like a little bird ( your cardinal perhaps )? Nicely done as always.
