i never knew, until tonight,
how much it must have hurt
to sit and laugh with me
while i was with someone else.
it never occurred to me,
how much you must have cried
after spending the night
with me and the 'other guy.'

how could i have known
that i was hurting you so?
we were just best friends.
why would it occur to me
that you weren't really happy?
we were just best friends.

i never knew, until tonight,
how hard it must have been
for you to see my innocent eyes
gazing into someone else's.
it never occurred to me
how much pain you sat through
to try to make me happy,
and avoid thinking about us.....

i never knew, until tonight.
i never knew, until it happened to me.

Very nice! My best friend happens to be a guy... So I know what you mean.

"We prefer to do things comfortably" said the Controller.
"But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."
"In fact," said Mustapha Mond, "you're claiming the right to be unhappy."
"Alright then," said the Savage defiantly, "I'm claiming the right to be unhappy." -Aldous Huxley "Brave New World"

I've been in the "best friend's" position before...

Great poem, i think ALOT of ppl relate to this.  Aye, it is a sick and twisted place we live in, suffices to say that no one is what they seem, sobering as that is.  At any rate, it is a great poem!
