LIFE

When days were filled with joy
And I danced merrily with my friends
Under the blue sky and shady trees
In the warm sun and soft breeze,
Mummy was my best friend
While Daddy stroked my long brown hair
And smiled at me
As I grinned happily and said
"Life is beautiful"

When days were about being hip
And I danced rhythmically to heavy music
With guys I barely knew
Under flickering lights and intense heat
In drunken daze and smoky haze,
Mummy and I couldn't have a decent conversation
Without almost killing each other
While Daddy stroked my cropped red hair
And smiled at me
As I laughed and said
"Life is for partying"

When days dwindled down a black hole
And absurd thoughts danced in my head
Thoughts about blood, razors, pills, knives and cliffs
As I would sit and stare
And cry in despair
Under the white ceiling and barred windows
In lonely darkness and pitying glances,
Mummy wouldn't speak to me
While Daddy stroked my flimsy, withered brown hair
And smiled at me
As a tear rolled down my cheek and I said
''Life is miserable''

When days were endless and meaningless
As I searched for something that I didn't know
And I took up any opportunity to feel alive, to feel real
Then the world seemed brand new to me
And I danced... oh boy did I dance!
I danced in the rain, in the scorching sun, in my bedroom, in the classroom, in the bathroom...
To the beat of my footsteps, the rhythm of my breathing, the music of the air, the shudders of the leaves, the fluttering of birds' wings...
Under curious glances as people labeled me pschyo
In static emptiness as I felt the beauty around me in my imaginary world
And I longed to be part of it,
Mummy was a distant figure
Just another empty face
While Daddy stroked my professionally done curled and perfumed...yes perfumed...hair
And smiled at me
As I smiled back wistfully and said
"Life is what you make of it"

Now days are gifts that surprise me every time I open them
And I've found what I was searching for
Lasting happiness
And now I dance because I know how to love
Know that I am loved
And I know that I'll survive no matter what happens
And I dance with sheer happiness
Under the yellow sun, the blue sky, the fluorescent moon and starry night
In good times and not so good times
In passion and in truth,
Mummy cried and hugged me
When I told her I was sorry
And maybe we'll be best friends again
But we've got a long way to go
While Daddy isn't in this world anymore
And I miss him heaps
But I still talk to him
As I stroke the marble tombstone
That has his name engraved on it
And I smile
And say
''Life is for loving''

This is by far my favorite line. I've known this feeling so many times. When life is too right or too wonderful to stand still and every fibre of your being tells you to move, flow with the world's beat... and as you do people move away from you... Either because they've never felt this way, or they're jealous... Which makes YOU the wierd one.

Wonderful first post. Welcome to our family. I have to admit that this piece raised goose pimples on my arms as I read. It flowed wonderfully and had an excellent theme. It sounds like you have lived much life for your teen years. Again welcome to the family and I hope to read more of your work.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shodows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face...

Wow!  This is incredibly powerful.  I too can relate.  Our experiences and views about life can change so much.  Truly remarkable, insightful first post, Welcome to Passions!

I am still rather young but I think that this poem shows a few stages in my life.  You make it sound like things are going to turn out ok.  So you have somewhat regained my belief in my relationship with my fam.  Thanks a bunch!  It was a wonderfully written poem!  You should be proud!
