How I wish I could look back to understand
back to when lives were taken
back to when families were separated
back to when children were murdered
I wish I could have helped to save them
I wish I could have tried to understand this senseless taking of human life.
They are no different than you or I.
They did not deserve this pain, this torture.
I wish I could look back to understand, to set lives free
to learn their pain and frustration.

Trying to understand;
  I can hear their screams
  I can hear their pain
  I can hear their fear
I can hear a mother's cry when children a shot down
Oh, that pain so great, so terrible
  I can smell the odour,
the odour of burning human life
  I can smell the sweat,
    the sweat of hard labour
  I can smell the fear,
    such an atrocity

I see the footage today, trying to learn what happened to them.
I watch the films today, trying to comprehend the pain they went through.
We all see the pictures, watch the torture, just trying to imagine this tragedy.
But the fact is we can't, unless our human life undergoes this.
These poor people, my heart cries out but there is nothing I can do.
Oh, please hear me. I am so sorry this had to happen to you.
Your time is now, it is here, time to rest, time to be reunited and live everlasting in that great kingdom called heaven.

No one deserves to be threated like this, I don't understand how any one could do this to an other human being, it must have been a monster, You really expressed your feelings about this well, very well done,
natalie...

I can't understand how they killed so many people for no good reason. There is no reason for killing like that, as you said...."senseless taking of human life". This is a beautifully expressed poem. Keep posting hun!

Love and hugs,

by any chance are you referring to the concentration camps of the second world war??
i learnt about it in history...and the whole concept of the jewish holocaust scares the hell out of me....coz if humans can treat each other with such disrespect and in such inhumane ways....who is to say the human race won't turn on itself again??

great poem with great expression

Hi Bec,

Yes, in english class we were studying the Holocaust and we had to write a poem about it.
It is a very scary thing..unbelievable actually.
It scares me too...so much!

Thank you for your support.

Hi Angel

I love the way you have written this.. and u r right, it is so hard to understand horrors like this, if u have not gone through the same experience, even though we may sometimes think we do. ^_^

Only one thing tho.. u have written.. "I wish I could 'of' helped to ..
I wish I could 'of' tried to ..." umm, u should use 'have' instead of 'of'.. ^_^

and.. probably a typo here.. but, hehe, u wrote "Oh, please 'here' me. I am so ..." (hear)

anyway, great poem!! .. very touching..

This is quite a powerful piece of work. Yo9u should be proud of this piece for it is very well described. You can almost feel every ounce of torture that they went through.

Great work.

Angel,
Thank you for posting this poem.  It was very well said.  It is horrible that these things could and did happen.  I myself and Jewish and had some older relatives die during the Holocaust.  It's terrible that because of one man's evil plan I never got to meet them.  ALso thank you for posting this because people should know what happened.  It's really sad that some people have never even heard of the Holocaust.  Really amazing writing.

War is Hell !!!!
and it brings out the worst in some people.
I have watched Schindler's List a couple times recently and I admire what he did.  I am not Jewish, but, I would have done what he did.  Save life instead of take it, regardless of religous belief.  The battle should be to save, not destroy humanity. Isn't that the only true victory?
Nice writing with this piece.

Thank you all so much for your replys. Many people have read this poem and they say it just makes them shiver! I did write this after viewing Schlinder's List so I guess that is why I became inspired.
Once again, thank you all so much for your support.
It means so much.

That poem made me think and I put myself in their place. It really drove into me how horrible it must have been to be going through that time.

That was a very emotional piece.  I too have tried to understand what those people went through, and I had a story in prose about it.  How can humans do this to each other?  How many must die before we realize that too many have?

I too are in the process of studying the concentration camps in school and I thought that this poem was an accurate display of some of the emotions that went through all of us in my class when we watched endless videos of concentration camps and the hell they went through.

Love Always,
