My Hourglass
by ©Richard Budig

Day unto night, night unto day
Eternity metes and measures time
Marking in its celestial way
The anniversary of a nebula
Or the birth or death of a great star
But my eye cannot see that far
Nor do my senses register the event
Instead my hourglass takes note
Of a notion born in all men
That time was in place before clocks
And that a reaper counts and stalks
So while I'm aware of distant nebulae
I'm ever so much more interested
In my last few grains of sand
And whether they all trickle through
Before I've held a loved one's hand
