To Care For You
by ©Richard J. Budig 1997

I lay beside you
For a long time last night
Feeling the nearness of you
Listening to your sleep sounds
Watching the rise and fall
Of life flowing within you
Sometimes, your breathing is
Long and measured
And sometimes secretly silent
As though you’re hiding
From the dark things of night
So I put my arm around you
To let you know that even in slumber
I was there to care for you.
