*Another translation of V.Vysotsky

Iíve been drinking Ďcause Iíve been feeling lonely
And Iíve been hearing someoneís voice at night
Iíve heard my name, some man was calling me
I looked behind me, a demonóďwhat a sight!Ē
He was blinking and making dumb faces,--
So I told him in a couple of phrases:

ďBrother, Iíve been drinking cognac just like that
But, you, Iím sure, drink only methylated spirits
Listen, Satan-demon-devil-villain-fiend-you evil cat,
Sit beside meóIíll be very pleased, my dearest,
Oh Iíll be damned! You seem so scared and lost
Get off my shoulder, or Iíll make a cross!Ē

Demon said that he is friends with Mr. Red
Heís my building manager, an alcoholic --
Demon only stuffed his cheeks with bread
And quickly drank my cognac in a frolic
ďDo not worry if it ends, weíll get some more
Itís just another visit to the store!Ē

I fell asleep, he traveled to the store alone
Woke upóheís here, Iím in confusion
Either, he came back into my home
Or maybe, this time, I am his illusion
He cursed a lot, he screamed and wailed
Then tried to kiss me, wiggling his tail

I only laughed at him until it hurt my lungs
Then asked: ďDear demon, in the underworld,
How do you treat the alcoholics and the drunks,
You cook them on pure oil? so Iím told...
He cursed under his breath, then uttered
ďYes, even there, the ruler is coldhearted!Ē

All ended, it got brighter in my place
I tried to offer him another drink
But he was gone; dissolved in space...
Now I await him!--but do not think
That Iím insane and weak in health
Itís better with a demon, than oneself
