Smile
my daughter my child of thirty three
my girl of dirty words
and runny nose
my girl of tempers and kisses.

What if you died,
your breath a sour ball,
your gross heavy chest
taking its final sigh
and made me free.

A weed grows
pluck it out
who would be the
mother of a monster

but,

there are times of
splashing bubbles
TV and popcorn
holding hands
a catching in the throat.
Or
what if I turned cold
one morning
and did not wake
to your head pounding
on the mattress beside me
you screaming again and again
MOTHER! (I am your clock
your legs
your conscience)

Smile
my daughter
my child of thirty three
my girl of dirty words
and runny nose
my girl of tempers and kisses

I was empty ‘til you filled me.

Wow! There is so much to digest in this piece. I'm gonna read it a few more times. Excellent writing.

Martie,
You captured an ellusive essence about the love of a child that is almost impossible in words. Excellent.
