October 27, 1999

Half the time drunk
with a cigarette in hand.
You were seldom sober,
once a hard working man.

Abusive and protective,
not once showing how you feel.
Your wife often wondered
if the scars would ever heal.

You are my grandfather
I loved you more as a kid.
The love I had for you,
was something never hid.

As I grew to be older,
I learned of who you were.
My feelings when I was little,
Are now nothing but a blur.

But you are still my grandfather,
no matter how you act.
The feelings I've had for you,
will always be intact.

You're now lying in your deathbed,
wondering how longer you will live.
I'm sitting in my bedroom floor,
crying over the love I didn't give.

No matter where you are,
I'll always think of you.
But when you leave this world,
I won't know what to do.

For you are my grandfather,
the only one I have left.
And when you are taken from me,
I'll consider it the worst theft.

Forever I will love you,
if you're drunk or sober.
But today I hear the news,
you won't make it past October.

I wrote this today after finding out my grandfather was in the hospital about to die. I have mixed feelings towards him, but I do love him very much, no matter how he may have once acted. Doctors say he doesn't have a good chance at living, but I will pray that his soul rest peacefully when he goes.

Lovely job Lyn. Forgive and love them when death approaches, you may regret it later if you don't. I know I've been there with an uncle like that.

Lynn, you are given a chance a lot of us never have, to make peace with your grandfather before he is gone. I hope you find the strength and courage to do so as it will make you a better person in the long run. Let him know you love him now before the chance passes. May God Bless you and he.

Lynn: If you get the chance, go give him a hug, if you don't, think a hug....sometime in the future these will be your your treasured thoughts...however he may be, think back to the happiest memories not the worst...

HUGS

Thank you all for your replies. My mother and her siblings went to visit him in the hospital today. I am going tomorrow. I pray that it won't be too late. I just couldn't handle going today. I plan on telling him that I love him and giing him a hug......

Yes, Lynn, it will mean the world to him. And to you. God bless you both.
