The soothing, gentle flickering fire
Deceives us in her warming fashion
For in her heart lies searing pain
And destruction in her passion

A moment then is all it takes
For her anger to incite a flame
She will show you who is boss
Leaving you with no one to blame

Your skin once smooth to the touch,
Lies savaged beneath the gauze
Your face, swollen beyond belief
Cannot reveal the cause

In an instant, your life changed course
You are a victim of her cruel desire
Lying now taking mechanical breaths
You hear the cackling of Lady Fire.

Beneath the blanket lies your future
Knowing nothing will be the same
In an instant, laughter was replaced
By unspeakable burning pain.

Normally, I am a very private person; but something has happened that I needed to write about and share with you.

You may have noticed my absence lately. This is one of the reasons. A very dear friend was badly burned in an accident on the job. His name is Brian and he’s 32 years old. He is such an outgoing, people person that it’s hard not to love him. We, his family and friends are grateful that he is alive but overwhelmed at the prospect of what his life is going to be like in the coming months. I thank God he was spared. Burns cover 27% of his body, mostly his right hand, arm and his stomach; his face, covered by a welder’s mask, was not touched. I would like to dedicate this poem to him.

This is really beautiful, DeVine....He is a very lucky young man....to have someone as loving & compassionate as you, there to give him strength. You spend as much time as you need - - we know you'll return to us when you're able! We have missed you terribly though.... Glad to know why you've been absent nonetheless....My prayers are also with this young man. Thank you for sharing.

PDV:..I'm so very sorry to hear about your friend...burns can disfigure the mind much more than they do the body because the mind shows no scars but how people treat you can leave lasting scars...I doubt he's able to have a hug but when he is, please pass one on from me to both him, especially him and his family...

I can't imagine any worse thing to happen to someone...I know the pain, the mental distress, and the on-going treatment necessary with such an incident. I too hope and pray all works out well for the young man. Nice poem, and I would imagine you're a great friend for this poor guy. He will be in my thoughts.

Senseless tragedy can strike any of us, any moment, any time. It's part of life. Fortunately for all of us, and especially for Brian, loving and caring friends are also a part of life. They are the "good things" that makes the inevitable "bad things" more tolerable.

Sharon, I know of no one whose soul is more compassionate or heart as encompassing as yours. I grieve for Brian's tragedy. But I celebrate his luck in having a friend like you. Both of you will be in my prayers.

Even without the explanation, this poem grips me.  Then I read the note at the bottom and .. well, it hit me harder.  I have seen what fire can do - it is my deepest fear to be burned.  This poem has power.
