Sitting in a bar, staring at the wall
When I was only three feet tall
Sitting on that stool, staring at the wall
Watching daddy have a ball.

Finished school and went to work;
Gardner, painter, office clerk
But, even then, when on my climb
I always seemed to find some time...for

Sitting in a bar, staring at the wall
A drink or two don't hurt at all
Sitting on that stool, staring at the wall
Drinking courage to meet Life's call.

The business grew. The business failed.
Health grew short. Skin wrinkled and paled.
A marriage came. A marriage went.
Just couldn't believe the time I spent

Sitting in a bar, staring at the wall
An occasional fling. An occasional brawl.
Sitting on that stool, staring at the wall
While spring turned to summer, then to fall.

Rest of my life ain't got no better.
Much as I tried, I can't forget her.
A year or two, I guess I'll die.
Got nothin' left and that is why....I'm

Sitting in a bar, staring at the wall
Brain consumed by alcohol.
Just sitting on that stool, staring at the wall
Waitin' for Life's final call.

Oh, that is so sad.......I feel like you just described my dad's life. If this is indeed about you....you have to stop it, because the people who care about you are hurting watching you do that to yourself...

Great poem....just hits close to home where it hurts.

Sweetheart: Mine's a cognac.. ..Seriously, if this is how life is like, change it...it really is to short for someone to be missing out...and you're far to nice a guy to be propping up some bar stool..

ps: if you're just in need of a drink, make that a double..*g*

Although it's a little different than most of what I read from you, I liked this very much. It's almost a song ! : ) Might make a great hit. ; ) If it's 'bout you....I wonder, but if so, you'll have my sympathy, if not...GREAT WRITING ! : )

Thank you all for your comments and concerns but.....no, it is definitely not about me. I don't even drink. I write poetry...and this is a topic I chose. That's it. (but your well-wishes are touching and I appreciate them)

Good to know its not about you.

It is a very good poem on a very serious subject.

Reminds me of the song, "Prop me up against the jute box when I die"--great poem Balladeer. You are so talanted! Alcahol, a crutch for a sad life. First it lifts you up, then it knocks you down. I hope this is not autobiographical.

Hehehe.... There's no way this would be about you - or you'd be spending your time looking at that bar room wall instead of here playing with us... That thought never crossed my mind reading this - What did occur to me, though, was your ability to comprehend the intricacies a lifestyle that you clearly don't live... Nice job m'deer...

This describes my grandfather so well. He's an alcoholic, but I love him all the same.
I love this poem too.

You have written so eloquently the tragedy of alcoholism. Another remarkable piece Balladeer.

I knew these old guys...I was a bartender for more years than I like to remember. It was sad that the barstool was the only place they had to go. Insightful poem, Balladeer.

I enjoyed this, it did flow like a song. So descriptive of so many. So many choose to sit in a bar instead of being home, for some they have nowhere else to go perhaps. I guess there are as many reasons as there are people! Again, great work!

well done, Sir!

Figured it wasn't about you. Seems to me you are too busy writing for stuff & nonsense of that sort. Good form for the subject.

Sir Balladeer: Great! Absolutely Great! Once again my friend, you prove that you is da poetic man! I never became intimate with that stool, but I think I sat on it once or twice. I swear its only got three legs. Again, I bow to you and yours for the insights that you share.
