The rasping comes from deep within
the tiny little chest.
The fear I see is vivid.
The cry I know by heart.
The helplessness I feel inside
tears at my mother's heart.
All I want is to take away
this frightening condition.
Helpless here to make each breath
an easier ambition.
I lay beside you, sleepless nights
listening to the rasp.
4 nights we lay amidst this fight,
the days we seek treatment.
Finally, my fears are put to rest,
your breathing is at ease.
A mother's fear, the greatest one,
to see her child so ill.
To fill the lungs, constrict the chest.
Croup is a nasty thing.
I am so glad that this ordeal
is finally at an end.
Amanda, my 3 year old
is healthy once again.

Since Sunday we have fought a battle with Croup. Today finally she is better. I know this doesn't really touch the fear I have experienced during the last few days. I am glad that I can share some of this with my friends.

Croup can hit a child at any age. When we were first sent to Battle Creek on transfer, no doctor, no idea of where hospitals were, etc., my eldest came down with croup, scaring us to death...all I had at hand unpacked was an 1800's physicians desk reference book, which covered croup, and its remedies. The remedy we used provided some instant relief for my daughter, by the next morning better, and within a few days, sans medication, she was well. Thank God for old books.

suthern....I am also glad she is better. Thankyou.

Balladeer....Yes something like this makes you realize how lucky you are to have healthy children. Or rather how lucky I am to have healthy children. Thankyou for the comment.

hoot...thankyou. I had to put this experience to words. My way of relieving some of the fear.

Sunshine....Yes thank God for those books. Croup is very scary when you have never dealt with it before. I am glad that you all made it through your experience unscathed.
