Oh, the Christmas trees are on the lots
Yes, and Santa's here for all his tots
There's a hint of snow up in the sky
And rosy cheeks on the passersby
There are gay bright lights all over town
And such busy folks all 'runnin'roun'
In search of gifts, oh, the 'perfect one'
Yes, the cards are sent, the baking's done
There's a special feel in the air tonight
As carolers sing of the Israelite
And the church bells peal out cheerily
As folks decorate that grand fir tree
And we wonder as they pass us by
If they can feel our silent cry...
Amidst all of those 'tidings glad'
"...Oh all we want is 'Dear old Dad'."

For he was our dad and friend, you see
Oh, he was the best there could ever be
And at this special time of year
We miss him most and wish him near
No, Christmas won't ever be the same because
We can't be with our Santa Claus
So, understand please, if we're sad
'Cause Christmas was our 'Dear old Dad'.

Oh, you can have the ribbons and the bows
The twinkling lights, all the mistletoes
All the friendly folks that scurry by
The hearts aglow and the snowy sky
The pumpkin pies; all those Christmas smells
The holly boughs and the ringing bells
Yes, the grandest trees all tinsel clad
All those 'perfect' gifts, all those greetings glad
The carolers singing 'O, Holy Night'
And children squealing with such delight
Those stockings all hung with so much care
And that special feeling in the air
All of Santa's elves and tiny deer
All the Christmas cards and Christmas cheer
No, they can't compare to what we had
Yes, we'd trade it all to have 'Dear old Dad'.

...And we wonder as you hurry by
...Oh, can you feel this silent cry?

In memory of my Dad.

Oh, Denise that was beautiful. I cried all the way through it. I too lost my dad a couple of years ago and your words so true of what the holidays are like now without him. Thank You so much for writing this!
HUGS TO YOU.

Thanks for sharing this lovely poem--sad that holidays hurt instead of cheer when we miss the one who made them so special.

This was moveing, I love my dad so much and I have often thought of how I would hurt looseing him! Beautiful poem! I have a suggestion that all daughters copy(with your permission) and send this to their dad inside a christmas card! Before it happens, or someone who is going through this.

Denise, you not only met, but surpassed the challenge quite well. I am amazed at your talents, and am sorry I missed this early on. But to bring it back to the top pleases me much.

Denise you wrote of one of my greatest fears. I am thoroughly a Dady's girl and the thought of him getting older scares me. He is my rock and I don't know how i would deal with loosing him. Great job with this one.

Sunshine, Marilyn, Watcher, WhtDove and Seymour, thank you all for reading and commenting. I'm glad it touched you.
Yes, Watcher, I know how you feel...just one more moment. (I wrote a poem about that too that I may share soon) Thanks again and I'm sorry for your loss as well. And to everyone who still has their parents with them, please cherish each moment while you can.

Very moving Denise--I liked the Christmas imagery.
