Footsteps fall
like snowflakes,
untraceable, oblique.

And she who seeks
the needle's kiss-
her teeth grind
to a primal smile,
unclean, precise.

Her mouth is pink and
wicked tonight.

I would like to hear more about this, Haskins-it intrigues me. Would you mind explaining (or is that what you're uh-ohing about )?

"Dwelt a maid belov'd and cherish'd by high and low,
But with autumn leaf she perish'd, long time ago..."

"Something sweet, something sort of grandish, sweeps my soul when thou art near..."

she is lost in the chaos of addiction, where lust and pain and degradation intermingle.

she trades her flesh to feed her habit.

as the footsteps draw near, she undergoes a transformation from addict to whore, but the two have become inseparable.

Very powerful, Haskins--I wasn't making the connection between the last lines and the rest of the poem, but now I see it. Thanks for explaining.
