Listening to every heart

Fire

There’s fire in the grasslands
quick, call 911, give the command,
car phones, now a saving grace
fire trucks on the run, fast paced.

But as in olden days long past
when it comes to saving grass
neighbors come out in scores
instincts rising from the core.

There’s fire in the grasslands
southern winds a’blowing
neighbors lending helping hands
fire creeps, crackling, redly glowing.

More calls made to neighbors working
cell phones appear in joined unison
“Call Jim” “Did Jake hear?” no shirking
work the fire anyway, if they can’t come.

There’s fire in the grasslands
ranchers moving cattle to safer locations
working tandem, hand in hand
farmers shaking heads at their vocation.

Fence wire cut, land becomes blackened
Smoke is thick, work’s not slackened
Water pumps liquid relief
farmers, ranchers quell their grief.

There’s fire in the grasslands,
rush quick, fear now put aside;
wheat will one day green again
check cows for sparks on hide.

When it’s over, thank the fighters,
and with neighbors, shake their hands
farmers, ranchers, gather tighter
When there’s fire in the grasslands.

"Tis a wonderful and overwhelming thing when human hearts come together for the good of all. "Tis also very sad it almost always takes a tragedy to reach that point.

You tell the story well, Sunshine. Where I come from, even sworn enemies will come to each other's aid when fire threatens a home and land. And afterward, a box of food, or an envelope of money will appear with no name attached. But as Michael said, it is a shame that it takes tragedy to bring that 'round.

I echo Severn....it amazes me that there seems to be no topic that escapes your poetic talent!

Thank you Dragoness and Pepper. I don't know where the ideas come from either, but as long as no one hears me talking out loud as they come to me, I'll continue to escape the 'stute!

Pepper, talent? More like luck...
