Listening to every heart

When It Starts Again

There are two deaths.

One comes from divorce.
I know that kind.
First, there is a deep loss,
then a decision.

Better with? Or without?

And if without, then a scurry
of leaving,
barely any conscious planning,
just “out,”
with kids, usually.

On “auto-mode,” one moves,
frantically,
caring for children, job,
never yourself.

Now I’m contemplating another death.

A second partner, life’s partner.
A tandem partner.
Lover, friend.
Friend, lover.

He speaks of his death
so I will make plans.

And now I’m at an age
where I know I can do some things,
in his place,
but not everything, like
I did at 28.

It’s different, now.

Any parting of a good friendship is a sort of death, but death IS so final. If this is happening to you, my heart and prayers are with you!

Puf, these darn poems should come with disclaimers. No, nothing is happening now, except for the fact that hubby sometimes says "when I die, you'll need to know such and so..." and with stuff like that, it's hard NOT to be thinking ahead. But thank you for the read, and the comment, and the concern...

I was just pointing out how we look at separation when we are at different stages of our life...
