John the Gum Man

Thatís what the children call him.
He sets time to the day
jaunting down the street
for a can of soup
and the paper,
eighty-six years
and straight-backed slender.

He has one arm,
lost the other in some long ago war,
or in the mines (the story varies)
"Hi John," the children shout.
"Got any gum?"
He reads them with his eyes.

Mothers who didnít know
feared his intent,
a policemen he had known
all his life
tried to tell him why.

The question is still
on his face.

UK...i agree with u and i think they miss it because some folks do not judge a piece by title or what it says...they only read and comment on postings by certain poets...as evidenced by the many replies certain poets repeatedly receive. Spreading comments around would be beneficial to more poets and broaden the reader's perspective i think.
