The Fish Tank Phenomenon

It seems a most peculiar thing.
We are like fish in a tank
Filled with billions of other fish,
Swimming elbow to elbow,
Each with a sense of being alone.
We can hardly stretch
Without bumping into each other,
And yet, we have only
The vaguest sense
Of anyone else there.
In a place like Los Angeles
With millions people,
How could anyone feel alone,
But we do!
Our feelings have
Little to do with reality.
The barriers between us and them
Are all inside our head.
While we swim
Bumper to bumper,
We search for the one and only
Other fish meant just for us,
Oblivious to the school of life
All around us,
With many a fishy story
About the one that got away
And the one that did us wrong.
We are such fascinating creatures
Locked in our isolation together!
