Long black dresses and veils,
Faces framed in starched stark white.
A large, stiff semi-circle across the front at the neck.
there was a huge rosary with a large crucifix that hung from her belt;
And shiny black shoes.
I remember thinking how gracefully she walked,
As that long dress and veil floated across the florr.
Like a victorian lady in her gown and veils.
It was comforting to see these "Brides of the Lord" at mass on Sunday,
And then again at sunday school.
They taught with love, firmness, toleration and understanding;
Soft-spoken, kind and gentle.
But times have changed and even the "Brides of the Lord" wear short dresses,
Of blue as well as black.
Their faces ae no longer framed in starched stark white,
Only a small band of white at the forehead;
And the large, stiff semi-circle is gone.
She is no longer set apart from every other lady in appearance,
And is no longer that gracefully floating image remembered from childhood.
Something is missing!
And with the changing of time, the mass is spoken in english.
I understood the latin as a child and recited mass with the father every sunday.
It made mass special to be spoken in another language,
There was such rhythm in the words it was like singing a song.
Something is missing!
The bible is unchanging!
God's commandments are unchanging, as is God's love!
So, being the worship of God,
Shouldn't the church be as steadfast and unchanging as God?
I believe so!
Something is missing!

You know, I'm not Catholic, but even I agree that with the changing of times, it's hard to feel the same respect for the nuns...I know maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned, but I too, as a child, saw them as holy & pure and had much respect for them and their walk....they're devotion fascinated me.....now, you can't hardly tell them apart from everyone else! I think they'll lose the identity & some of the respect by "modernizing" themselves....It's just not the same.....I know what you mean! It's not that I'm so shallow as to think the attire made them righteous, they're still godly, but their visible separation made a statement to society....one I think, of discipline, loyalty, and purity....and that's gone now....

There is a certain mystery and awe attached to those who dedicate their lives to their God ... and you have captured this effortlessly here ...

This piece makes a statement about the power of symbols ... how they affect us, and how we might never notice until someone takes them away ... I applaud you.

Thanx for the applause. When I was a child church was an important part of my life. But with so many changes, I have become disillusioned especially with the Roman Catholic Church. I haven't found what I'm looking for as far as a church I feel comfortable attending so for now my home is my chapel.
