Cradling Dragon's head
against her side,
the Lady
begins to cry.
With effort
He opens his eyes wide,
then turns to her
with a sigh.

Dragon lets out
a stenorous moan,
that tears
at the Lady's heart.
With pain his great claws
gouge at the stone,
tearing
huge boulders apart.

She's staring at Dragon's
broken form,
quivering
against the ground.
She screams defiance
into the storm,
as her heart
begins to pound.

Remembering
her ties to the Land,
the Lady
cries out her need.
Nature itself rouses
to her command,
the Darkling storm
picks up speed.

The Land pours
argent force into her,
a crackling
spasm of light.
It fills her up
with healing power,
in contrast
to Darkling might.

She straddles Dragon's neck
with her thighs,
then sets
her hands on his head.
Healing Dragon
even as he dies,
all unspoken words
are said.

Do you recall
the last on the bill,
the strong
but cowardly knight?
Entering the scene
for good or ill,
he watches
their wretched plight.

Deeply involved
in Dragon's healing,
she does not see
his advance.
The Land's power
leaves her mind reeling,
locking her deeply
in trance.

He's creeping up
like a frightened deer,
cowardice
his only shield.
With effort
he overcomes his fear,
Dragon's fate
will now be sealed.

Watching the worst
of Dragon's wounds heal,
he hastens
to place his blow.
The downward stroke
is fed by his zeal,
he has nothing left
you know.

His mighty strike
severs Dragon's spine,
the second
impales his heart.
The Lady falls back
laying supine,
the knight feels
his new life start.

The Lady screams out
in grief and hate,
dead love
leaving her hollow.
Willfully she chooses
her own fate,
her true love
she will follow.

Grief feeds
her silent rush at the knight,
true love
will always prevail.
Reason recedes
in face of her plight,
her grief
escapes in a wail.

That primal cry
spins the Knight around,
eager to face
this new test.
As he turns to the source
of the sound,
his blade takes her
through the chest.

Time stopped.

Stunned by the thought
of what he has done,
his new-found bravery
leaves him.
Dropping the sword
he sees her blood run,
and the light
in her eye dim.

Inarticulate grief
makes him weak,
he falls to his knees
and cries.
He finds the courage
that he did seek,
only to watch
as it dies.

Tied to her fate
the Land does react,
saving it's own fate
you see.
Dragon's and Lady's
forms do contract,
the Land shapes
their destiny.

Their glowing forms
pulse with light
and merge,
the knight
is frozen in place.
Their bodies disappear
in a surge,
the storm absorbs
every trace.

The storm was born
of pure Darkling might,
fed now
by the Land's power.
It begins to glow
with a gentle light,
the knight
falls down to cower.

The storm pours itself
into the ground,
the Land
swallows it whole.
With crackling might
and unheard sound,
the Land births
a brand new soul.

The knight witnesses
an awesome sight,
a shining dragon
is born.
Faceted crystal skin
glows with light,
that rainbow hues
do adorn.

The dragon looks
at the knight with love,
the Land
forgives him his sin.
It whispers
magic words from above,
then thunders them out
again.

Magic
rushes in from everywhere,
feeding the dragon's
first spell.
The hybrid might
crackles in the air,
fulfilling
it's purpose well.

The crystal dragon's
body does burst,
breaking
into untold parts.
Each piece floats
on the still air at first,
before
the genesis starts.

Each shard begins
to grow and expand,
new life takes shape
within them.
Graced with a sentience
born of the Land,
their unfolding light
grows dim.

From each piece
a new dragon is born,
every one
a different hue.
For the loss of Dragon
they all mourn,
starting
their own life anew.

You should know by now
who wrote this tale,
the knight himself
to be sure.
He gave up his sword
and his chain mail,
to be
a poet obscure.

Dream, this story is so fascinating! Each part was better than the first! I am astounded, in awe! This piece is by far my favorite. I love, "Each piece floats on the still air first, before the genesis starts."

Thanks much but, as I figured would happen, people rapidly tired of a drawn out piece.

I don't know if I caught the others. But this was great! It pulled me right in. A fantastic story you weave.

Apart from loving the saga, I was fascinated by the birth of a new and effective word. A cross between 'sonorous' and 'stentorian' 'Stenorous' should definitely become part of the language.

Perhaps I was wrong in my first assessment. Thank you for the response.

Sue, sometimes I can't find a word that fits quite right. Sorry if it seems like butchering the language, but that one did fit.

I could always invent a new language to write in. In fact, I believe that I have the beginnings of one around here somewhere.
