Lord, give my child the strength today,
to enjoy 1st grade in his own way.

Give him the courage to speak his mind
To not be shy. Good friends he'll find.

Keep him as sweet as he was before.
Protect him as he walks through the door.

My fear of guns and all the hate
Please not my son will they take.

I'm sad today for giving of my son
To an unsecured school when the bell is rung.

I'm happy today because he's got wings,
He'll soar with life, and beauty he'll bring.

Please hold his little hands cause I'm not able,
to be there with him as he sits at the table.

I'll go about my day with him in my heart,
I'll be the first there, when dismissing will start.

Just please keep him innocent, sweet, and pure,
And all and any hate I'm sure he'll endure.

This really hits home with me...I have a son who will start school next year, and I have this horrific fear of letting him go under someone else's supervision all day long....I know they won't care for or watch him as much as I do !!! I think every young mother fears this day ! When school begins....Very nice job on this piece & Welcome!!

What a great poem. I was touched by it so much I'll remember your child in my prayers. God bless you both.

A very sweet poem - although I'm sure he has an guardian angel with him. You never know. Ten years ago, the first day my cousin Karin was beginning first grade, she was terrified of going there. But when her mom Jody told her that I was going with her and my other cousin Brian to their school, she wasn't afraid anymore. My aunt still remembers it, and needs me there when things like this happen. God bless, and a guardian angel will be watching.

CG: As always, straight from the heart, but you know the best gift in life other than the birth of a child created with love, is the gift of love..and that will be your gift to your child...forever! You can't protect them from life, just promise to be there when they need you....always!

May your children always be safe and protected from harm...

I loved this poem! I had that day of dread 3 times. Now days it's scary with all the violence. It breaks our heart to send them off, but that we must leave to God.

Very nice, CG - A mother's lament - How to teach her child to cut the apron strings she doesn't want severed herself.......

Carolina Girl, It's been a lot of years for me since I sent my first off to first grade, but even then the worry was there. Loving our children makes us always want to be there and protect them. Great poem, and may God walk beside your child everyday.

I originally wrote this poem on another site on Tuesday morning, the day he started school. My fears of hate and violence were very, very real.....only to be justified hours later by the shooting in LA...which I posted about in my poem "Why". I realize I can't keep my son in the protection of our home 24 hours a day, but I quit my job 6 years ago, the day he was born, to keep him innocent and out of harm for as long as I could. The thought of him going to a place to learn, with the possibility of being hurt or killed, makes me pray harder. Funny thing is, after the LA shooting, I felt very guilty and selfish for praying for my child only..and not praying for every child!

Funny but this hit me from the childs view point. I can remember my mother sitting with me my first day.
