The schoolmarm and the pastor
Led such a sheltered life.
He said "Hello" on Sundays;
She longed to be his wife.
And anything to please him
Was not too much to ask.
She'd pull down the stars for him
And in his praises bask.
She had once been a loving soul
Showed that side to a few.
But as she watched her hero
She knew that wouldn't do.
So she became judgmental,
Critical of every flaw.
Whatever might find his favor
Became the schoolmarm's law.
She pointed out each person's sins
Her words were most unkind.
But to the changes in herself
The old maid was quite blind.
All she knew was that he smiled
At her and gave a bow.
So she became an expert
At holier-than-thou.
She built a comfy little nest
On spirits she had broken
As she waited for those words
The pastor left unspoken.
One day the pastor took a bride
And shocked more than a few.
He warned her of the schoolmarm:
"Be careful of that shrew."

Just goes to show ya! It's not the liquor or the drugs that pass into your mouth...it's what comes out.....and another thing.....Ya see?...If she was doing that to someone like me....she wouldn't have been able to find a single solitary "flaw?"....course....Pastor Toerag doesn't really have a "ring" to it does it?....Reverend Toerag?...Nope.....Parsons Toe?.....Nope...I may couldda been a nun?....Sister Toe?

Toerag: Now sweets.... you know you're not quite perfect. *G* There is that patience thing... or lack thereof! LOL. But I like Reverend Toerag... I certainly revere you! *G* (Brother Toerag won't do... I don't feel at all sisterly towards you! LOL.)

I do wonder at those who live to condemn others... it would be nice to take a peek and see what St. Peter has to say to them! *G*

Suthern, this is a wonderful poem, well written and with a good message to it. It boggles the mind to think how good you could be without that unspeakable, evil influence hanging over you! Please write more. I really enjoy your style!

Kudo's to you Mistress Suthern'
I know that you are not
A schoolmarm or a shrew
But this poem tells me
What more you ought to do.

Write poems sweet lady.
This is great.

Belle

You really messed up this time. You let your talent a wee bit too far out of the bag. Now, we all will expect more, and you will no longer be able to sit by silently without urgings from us. This was a really well-structured poem with a terrific moral. I loved how quickly and smoothly I found myself at the last line. Reading poetry, it seems to me, should be pleasurable and uplifting. You've done both for me in this poem.

(If Redwriter happens to come by this way, don't believe a word you read about my "kitty" poem.)

You've given a very light touch to a pretty heavy moral. Well done!
