At first blush it’s only a poem
like others that have gone before
but bide your time, read between the lines
you’ll find it never rains but it pours

First and foremost is the rhyme
it must tickle your fancy just so
and when all is said, and all is done,
the riddle in the rhyme, you’ll know.

Certainly, it does my heart good
to see you here, reading poetry.
I hope my lines today have not
added insult to injury

With all due respect, I beg,
the milk of human kindness from you.
Tho flattery will get you nowhere,
could you spare a good word or two?

Do not damn with faint praise
nor be a fair weather friend.
I can face the music that
your critique will send.

If still waters run deep in here,
it’s a blessing in disguise.
For each line is written to get you,
right between the eyes

So read from top to bottom
I expect no words of praise
but try to count how many
phrases are cliches!

Where's JP, our self-appointed cliche police officer, when you need him?

I thought I was up to the challenge. I really did. But I ran out of fingers in the fourth stanza...

I was cleaning my office and found my 'Dictionary of Cliches' among all my other dictionaries and sat down to put this together...

Hint: There is at least one in every stanza but the last.....

Ok, devine ms. P- I *love* a good challenge so here goes:

1. "At first blush"
2. "others that have gone before"
3. "read between the lines"
4. "It never rains, but it pours"
5. "First and formost"
6. "tickle your fancy"
7. "just so"
8. "when all is said, and all is done"
9. "it does my heart good"
10. "insult to injury"
11. "With all due respect"
12. "the milk of human kindness"
13. "Flattery will get you [everywhere]"
14. "could you spare" [a dime]
15. "fair weather friend"
16. "face the music"
17. "still waters run deep"
18. "a blessing in disguise"
19. "right between the eyes"

how'd I do?

Oh..no fair!! I'll give it a go, Poet. I'm going to guess 21...which would be fitting for today...LOL. Honestly...I've counted 20 or 21 each time. One line I wasn't sure about. Hmmmm, if I'm so way off, I'll be sooooo embarrassed!

My guess is dp's list plus two: bide your time and faint praise.

Never mess with a copywriter! Doreen has won the prize...which is:

May she never find cliches in her writing!

Thanks it was fun!
