Listening to every heart

0 posted 1999-08-10 05:22 PM

In this world of legalese and lore
Where ethics come first to the fore
I sit and ponder oh my fate
For all these motions cannot be late.

Yet no whine shall my voice entertain
When the phone is answered, show no disdain
For all those yahoos who think I’ve time
To listen to their tales of crime.

Here comes the attorney I slave hereunder
acting like I’ve made the blunder
on the brief he’s crafted himself alone ~~
hee, hee, for his mistakes I will not atone.

Late morning mail brings the news
now my morning shifts into high cruise
all deadlines are coming, make no mistake
not even tonight will I get to snooze.

Appellate briefs must be concise
and I’m sure to count the pages all
for should I be wrong or my margins askew
away my attorney’s case will fall.

Now impending discovery sits upon my desk
looking like Mt. Vesuvius reborn anew.
Make no mistake, no time shall I take
for lunch, or a life, but only look for clues.

For the heck of it why don’t you pick
my brain on some forgotten file of old
and I’ll search the archives and clear the dust
and find this “pot of gold!”

Take on some investigation, and bill some real time?
Oh heck yes boss, and put in some overtime.
Fed Ex’s out my ear…faxes galore and e-mails furious
I picked this legal life as of law I was curious.

Sunshine, you've got too much free time on your hands to be able to write this delightful little look into the workplace!

I'm in the best of both worlds: a wonderful boss and a wonderful husband...they are not the same man, but that they share the same birthday and are both Vets...well, it makes you wonder about God's plans...

I wrote this because I was asked to do an article for our Legal newsletter, and I couldn't get my mind on anything serious. Luckily the editor liked it and it will be "published..."

Thanks for your comments. And Tim, perchance someday we'll meet...how would you like to volunteer for some State chores with KLPI? {~,^}

For thou hast more of the Wild-Goose in one of thy wits,
Than I am sure I have in my whole five.

I don't work as a legal assistant anymore... but I can certainly relate... Sleep? What's that? LOL. Great poem!
