Droplets of crimson blood
lay like rubies
in the frozen mud
forming a random
pattern of decay.

This misbegotten war
justified
the opening of the door
that desperate morality
locks
each day.

Fields of dishonored dead,
in rictus,
seem more like
statues instead,
monuments
to the horror
we embrace.

The warming
morning sun
exposes the full
scope
of what we've done
to the countenance
of those we debase.

The sweet smell
of fresh death
rises
to tantalize
with every breath,
the unfortunate ones
who do survive.

We ease their
pain and strife
giving their grief
to the knife
to thank the gods
for
our being alive.

Eventual conquest
will place us
among
those we detest,
signaling
the end of
our own Empire.

This newly-won glory
will one day
be the sum
of our story
and the height
of new conquerers'
desire.

I do love this one, Dream! Dark, and yet, beautiful...
