While standing on this mountain
and looking far below.
I took a sec to ponder..
"oh what a way to go."

If I should lose my footing
and fall to my demise.
Would anyone hear the echoes
of my agonizing cries?

I looked out there for miles
saw no one else around.
When a tree falls in the forest
does it really make a sound?

I really need no answer
to the questions on this test.
No game of Mother May I
Just back up 2, 3, 4, 5 steps.

Lucie

I know exactly what you mean about backing away from the edge. This poem could almost be thought of as a metaphor for thinking about straying away from a relationship in which the partner never speaks, never responds, but the author is too committed to call it quits. Have I read too much into this?
